It’s been rumored for a while, but it’s getting closer and closer to being official now. Quarterback of the Saints Drew Brees will actually retire at the end of the New Orleans season, reports Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer (Twitter video link).
That means whatever happens, tonight will be Brees’ last game at the Superdome, as the Saints will then head to Green Bay if they win. This matches what we heard earlier this weekend, when it was reported that those close to the veteran flagman believed he would hang up his crampons. He could always reverse his trajectory, but it really looks like this is the end of the line for 42 years.
If so, it will close one of the most illustrious careers in NFL history, with Brees’ name on the record books. He currently has the most yards in league history and the second most touchdowns behind Tom brady. Brees signed a deal with NBC Sports last April, so he already has his post-game career.
For the past few years, there has been speculation that Brees was nearing the end and missed a lot of time with health issues in each of the past two seasons. As soon as it’s official, all eyes will immediately turn to what New Orleans will do to replace the man who has been the starter since the 2006 season.
Taysom Hill is the only other passer currently on the list, although that same report from the start of the weekend says they would like to sign again Jameis Winston, who is on the way to becoming a free agent. Hill was up and down during his stretch as the team’s starter this year, while Brees missed the time with a rib injury.
Reports have indicated in the past that Sean payton sees Hill as the starter of the team’s future, though it’s not clear if he still thinks so after taking a closer look at him in 2020. We’ll have a much longer and more sentimental post on retirement of Brees whenever the Purdue product and Super Bowl XLIV champion himself confirms the news.
