Drew Brees doesn’t look like someone about to retire from the NFL.
Brees coach Todd Durkin posted a video to social media on Saturday that shows the Saints quarterback pushing a weighted sled through a parking lot and includes the captain: “I don’t know why he’s so cra- cra today, but something must be prepared … “
Brees was expected to retire shortly after the Saints’ season ended with a playoff loss to the Buccaneers on Jan. 17.
The video of him training fiercely won’t allay those suspicions. Here’s an excerpt from the comment in the video: “Drew, what are you doing? OK, he never did that! . . . I don’t know what he’s doing. . . Never quite been done before! . . . You needed a challenge… This is a new record because it has never been done before!
Brees was also expected to retire in the last offseason before moving back in March and signing a two-year contract.
“Last year he joined the Saints coaching staff at the Pro Bowl and they cried because it was his last game. He was retiring, ” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on The Rich Eisen Show this week. “And then he took a little while and behold, he came back in March.
Brees recently agreed to cut his salary in 2021 to a league minimum $ 25 million to help the Saints navigate the hell of the salary cap. This has been interpreted as a sign that he is retiring.
But Brees pushes that sled like a man planning to avoid pass-rushers, not a man concerned with keeping his father in shape.
Few athletes manage to script an end to the championship like John Elway, Peyton Manning and Michael Strahan, but Brees’ last game was a three-steal debacle against Tom Brady. That didn’t suit the all-time leader of the NFL in terms of passing footage.
“I’m not saying he’s coming back. I still think he will retire, ”Schefter said. “I don’t think these things are black and white and he’s ready to go out for now, although I think ultimately that will be the decision.
