DriveClub had quite the trip, is not it? Evolution Evolution Studios have developed this unfortunate exclusive driver to the PlayStation 4, and to say that it has gone through a difficult period would be a euphemism. His time on the road is almost over, Sony has removed the title of the PlayStation Store. In addition, the servers will stay online for a few more months. After the end of March of next year, those who will still have the DriveClub will be disconnected from the incumbent clubs and will have to slide for ever longer in the rain.

One thing you can say for the game is that it has been at the heart of all that is good or bad about this generation of consoles. Announced alongside the PS4 in February 2013, DriveClub was absolutely beautiful from the very beginning. This was one of the first flagship titles of Sony, with Killzone: Shadow Fall, who really demonstrated the power of his new machine. Like many Worldwide Studios teams, Evolution was aiming for a slightly more serious goal for the PS4. Motorstorm was crude, aggressive and messy; DriveClub was more sophisticated, straight and beautiful.

The developer also indicated very early that he was considering supporting the game after its launch with a lot of additional content. "In the end, the game you buy at launch will be the starting point for a wider experience that will be fueled week after week with new content," said movie director Col Rodgers. and the DriveClub experience at its release is going to be absolutely gigantic. "It was also expected that the game would become one of the first PlayStation Plus posters on PS4, an instant community for this social racing game.

Things started to go a bit off-road when it was announced that DriveClub would miss its release date of the launch day of the PS4. It was delayed by several months, finally being launched in October 2014. The weather was filled with tantalizing clips and claims from Sony that the development was going well.

However, once the game started, things quickly collapsed. Major server problems forced Sony to delay the free edition of the game, while Evolution rushed to fight the fires. It was a terrible start for the racing game that defended online gambling, and the problems would persist for several weeks. Finally, DriveClub went back on track, but the damage was done; the reputation of the game was ragged.

It would be a shame to remember that DriveClub failed. Over the years, the pilot has gradually become one of the best of the PS4, thanks to the Herculean efforts of Evolution Studios currently closed. From the implementation of new types of time and reruns to the free introduction of tracks, cars and new events, the developer has done his best to try to regain the trust of his players. And, to be fair, the game has sold rather well, despite the problems.

That was not enough, however, to save the studio. Heavy layoffs took place and the rest of the staff continued to push for decisive fixes. Eventually, the PS Plus edition of the game was released and the following months saw the size and quality of the DriveClub balloon. He has gradually found his potential with this new model of "games as a service".

Unfortunately, Sony made the decision to completely close Evolution Studios in March 2016. The team would then make DriveClub VR for the emerging virtual reality technology, but the studio's efforts were over. DriveClub was ultimately the game that he promised, but the company that made it disappear was dissolved. A large part of the team would then create Onrush for Codemasters, while others would be transferred to other teams within Sony.

This largely concluded the transformation of DriveClub, but what a transformation. This delayed launch game of the PS4 with all the server problems has become one of the best and most brilliant drivers of the console, with probably the best season ticket on the system. The developer has held on long enough to see his ambitions for a truly social and connected social race title come to fruition. During the years following the closure of Evolution, the game continued to feature in the background as an exclusive PS4.

As we said above, it is a rather extraordinary journey, which lasted the entire life of the PS4. Again, one could say that DriveClub draws a parallel with almost all the pros and cons of modern gaming. Reliance on online features meant that the title was stuck at the starting line, but countless patches and content updates allowed a triumphant return.

From now on, you will not be able to buy DriveClub digitally and, in less than a year, the online features, which are essential to the experience, will be disabled. It is therefore the beginning of the end, but there is still a little time to take the place of the driver. Will you take the game for a final victory round before the server closes in March?
