Driver searches a family of eight in Garnerville

Six children are without a mother after a man intentionally broke his car in a Rockland County family on Wednesday.

Police say Jason Mendez, 35, faces charges of second degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder after he said he deliberately drove his car to a family of eight just before 2 pm . Wednesday.

The family was standing in front of a 7-Eleven at 75 Central Highway in Garnerville when his father, 35, asked Mendez not to smoke near his children.

Investigators say Mendez then rode in his car and mowed the family before coming back to hit them again.

The 32-year-old mother was killed. Sources told News 12 that the mother was expecting another child.

The father and 6 children aged 10 and under stay in the hospital.

Mendez remained at the scene, but then had an altercation with the police.

"They had to take the subject at arm's length.The subject came out of the vehicle with a knife, the agents treated him, removed him and took him into custody," said the captain. Police Martin Lund, Haverstraw Police.

Mendez was sent back to the Rockland County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court next week.
