Driver searches a family of eight in Garnerville

GARNERVILLE –

Police announced that a driver had killed a mother in a family of eight on Wednesday afternoon in Rockland County.

The incident occurred at 75 Garnerville Central Expressway around 2 pm Police said that the driver had been arrested and may have struck the family intentionally.

The family included a 32-year-old mother, a 35-year-old father, and six children aged between 1 and 10 years old. Sources told News 12 that the mother was expecting another child.

Police told News 12 that a car had struck the eight family members outside of a 7-Eleven.

The father and the children were taken to the hospital for non-fatal injuries.

Haverstraw police arrested a 35-year-old suspect and charged him with second-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder. Mendez pleaded not guilty to charges in a Haverstraw court Wednesday night.

Police identified the driver as Jason Mendez of Washingtonville.

When the police approached the driver, officials said he had a knife. The police confronted him with a firearm and used a taser to get the suspect off.

Police said the suspect had crushed the family twice.

A verbal altercation between the father and the driver about smoking near the kids may have precipitated the incident.
