Detectives are investigating the death of a man who was pulled from his van and suffered “blunt trauma” after trying to run over people on a Hawthorne sidewalk early Saturday, the County Sheriff’s Department said. Los Angeles.
The coroner’s office identified the man as Melguin Lopez Santos, 40, of Los Angeles. After some sort of argument at a business on the 14200 block of Hawthorne Boulevard, Santos was told to leave, but instead climbed into his truck, sped onto a sidewalk and nearly ran over several customers, authorities said.
Santos lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree, then a building. People pulled him from his truck and a fight ensued, authorities said.
Hawthorne police officers who responded to the scene shortly after midnight Friday found Santos on the ground, fatally injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The authorities have not announced any arrests in this case.
