With a brain-melting presidential election in just a few days, let’s take a few minutes to enjoy some more harmless form of failure, courtesy of Roborace.
The Autonomous Racing League released its Season Beta 1.1 race on Thursday, ideally to show off the potential of high-speed auto racing that doesn’t endanger human drivers. Unfortunately, a car belonging to the SIT Acronis Autonomous team had other ideas, according to Engadget.
One of the engineers behind the autonomous speedster took to Reddit to explain what had happened. It turns out there is a pre-race initiation lap in which a human driver guides the car to the start line. For some reason the steering mechanism was locked fully to the right during this process, so when the race started in earnest the car decided to take a detour straight into a barrier on the side of the track.
Roborace is the world’s premier driverless / autonomous motorsport category.
This is one of their first events to be broadcast live.

The Engineer continued to call this an “extremely rare event” so don’t expect to see this every time Roborace or some other standalone racing league lines up. Yet he just doesn’t get more of 2020 than an impressive machine that destroys itself by veering hard to the right despite its better judgment.
