California transportation officials release jaw-dropping drone footage of the aftermath of the collapse of the States Scenic Coastal Highway.

The startling aerial images show the massive stretch of the famous Pacific Coast Highway engulfed by a deep crevasse in the cliffs bluffing the Pacific Ocean. The bird’s eye view reveals how huge sections of the north and south tracks collapsed into the sea amid torrential rainstorms on Friday.

“Watch this amazing drone video of the # Hwy1 wash in Rat Creek about 15 miles south of #BigSur. Our teams are on hand to secure it, assess the damage and begin the cleanup / repairs, ”California Department of Transportation tweeted Sunday.

Authorities are still assessing the damage and have been unable to give a timeline for the completion of the massive undertaking required to repair the mid-section of California Highway 1.

The freeway, which stretches 656 miles along the Golden State coast, is closed for miles in both directions of the disaster.

No injuries were reported.
