New drone footage released by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office shows recent damage to California’s iconic Highway 1, where part of the road collapsed after heavy rains swept it through the sky. ocean last week.
The footage shows much of the highway still flooded and covered in debris from recent rains and landslides.
At the point of collapse, about 45 miles south of Carmel in the Big Sur area, the two lanes of the road were completely gone, with a huge hole sloping towards the Pacific Ocean in its place.
Images from the sheriff’s office show water still flowing through the collapsed part of the road, which had fallen into the sea on Friday.
The collapse comes as California has experienced significant landslides, mostly in areas burned in the previous season’s wildfires. Landslides often follow forest fires.
“Heavy rains are always a challenge, but when you have the fires and the precipitation just months apart, or even years apart, you generate a whole new category of risk,” University of Environmental Studies. Stanford Professor Chris Field, who helped write a 2012 United Nations report on climate change and global disaster risk, previously told NBC News.
Scientists say climate change is only making these related disasters even more common.
“Realize that you can’t go through Big Sur in Southern California … If you’re coming from the south, you can’t go to Northern California,” the sheriff’s office told residents, as emergency crews s ‘strive to assess the damage, remove debris and figure out how to rebuild.
