KLEIN, Texas – Harris County Constable Mark Herman said on Monday that an suspected impaired driver was responsible for an accident that killed a mother and two of her children on Sunday in a multiple vehicle crash in the Spring area .

Herman said the driver, Daniel Canada, 35, will be held responsible after he essentially “turned off a family.”

Another child, a 2-year-old in the same family, has been on life support since Monday at a hospital in Houston, Herman said.

The crash of 7 vehicles happened on Sunday evening at FM 2920 and Gosling Road. Officials said several people were injured and several vehicles were on fire.

Another person from another vehicle was transported overland with non-fatal injuries, investigators said.

All of the other occupants involved had no or minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Herman said the vehicle from Canada struck the 28-year-old mother’s vehicle at high speed. Canada is expected to survive and suffer from bumps and bruises from the crash. He has currently been charged with one count of assault while intoxicated with grievous bodily harm and three counts of manslaughter while intoxicated with the possibility of escalation of charges, depending on the current situation with the 2 year old child in hospital.

The names of the deceased family members have not been released, pending notification from the family.

Herman said the suspect’s blood alcohol level was the “main contributing factor” in this case. He said it was 0.15%. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, you are legally intoxicated in Texas when your blood alcohol level reaches 0.08%.

“I really don’t want to put my personal thoughts in there because that wouldn’t be too nice,” Herman said. “But professionally, I can tell you that law enforcement continues to fight our impaired drivers (with DWI initiatives among the local sheriff and local constables.)”
