Dell announced its new Precision 7000 series workstations based on Intel's Xeon Scalable 'Cascade Lake-SP' processors and supporting a set of new hardware options. The new systems will target a wide range of workloads ranging from content creation to scientific simulations and from artificial intelligence to healthcare.
As Dell's flagship workstations, the Precision 7800 and 7900 series machines rely on the best of what hardware developers can offer to deliver uncompromising functionality, performance, and scalability. Precision 7800 systems come in a variety of forms: tower / desk, while Precision 7900 workstations can be used as on-site towers or rack-mounted (2U size).
The new Precision 7820 and Precision 7920 computers, to be launched in May, will be based on one or two Intel Xeon Scalable ™ Cascade Lake-SP ™ processors, providing up to 56 supported physical cores. the AVX512_VNNI instructions, which is advantageous for workloads using neural networks. Dell puts the spotlight on AI (and virtual reality) in its announcement. Graphically and GPGPU, the new Precision 7900 series machines will be equipped with up to three NVIDIA Quadro RTX graphics cards (no word on GPUs based on GV100, but it is very likely that they will also be offered in option). .
The most advanced configurations of the Precision 7920 can carry up to 3TB of DDR4 DRAM, up to 16TB of PCI / NVMe solid state storage (ie multiple M.2 and / or or U.2., depending on configuration) and up to 120/96 GB of storage space enabled by ten 3.5-inch hard drives (that is, Dell has certified hard drives 12 TB with the new system). Of course, workstations will support all types of connectivity, as well as 5.25-inch FlexBays (enabling ODDs and / or additional I / O modules for specific purposes).
Given the capabilities of the new Dell Precision 7900 workstations, they will undoubtedly require a sophisticated cooling system. According to Dell, the chassis of its 7900 Series machines features "intelligent multi-channel thermal design" that "enables advanced cooling and acoustics". Dell will unveil the actual configurations of the new Precision 7000 Series workstations sometime in May. Prices will obviously vary, but the most high-end monsters will obviously cost tens of thousands of US dollars.
