It’s no secret that Capcom Duck tales for the Nintendo Entertainment System is a bona fide classic, especially in the field of video game music. But being an NES game, it only has a dozen quick tracks to enjoy. A first prototype that is currently in the round, however, expands the final soundtrack with another song by original composer (I guess) Hiroshige Tonomura.
This Duck tales build, which, according to The Cutting Room Floor, dates from February 5, 1989, is the first glimpse we have yet had on the iconic platform’s development process. (The final game was released around September 15, 1989.) As such, several key items (like red diamonds, treasure values, HP reloads, and end level names) are missing. You can read all about this stuff on the TCRF wiki; what particularly excites me is the new music on the scene selection screen:
It definitely has a different feel to the original card theme. Where the track that made it official Duck tales the release is more mysterious and repetitive, the prototype song is upbeat and adventurous as one would expect from a children’s cartoon-based game. I really like the subtle bassline that livens it up as well.
Although, let’s be honest, the song isn’t as immediately iconic as the song that plays during the moon stage, it’s always nice to have a little more information on how to make a video game, especially a game so music dependent as Duck tales. It’s unclear why the developers preferred the final arrangement to this newly discovered treasure, but I’m glad there are people like TCRF cataloging these finds.
