Duke withdrew from the ACC men’s basketball tournament due to a positive case of COVID-19 within the program, the school announced Thursday morning.

“This will end our 2020-2021 season,” Duke athletic director Kevin White said in a statement. “We wish all of the teams that still play college basketball good health and the best in the coming weeks.”

Duke, who was seen as a bubble team for the NCAA tournament needing one or two more wins to secure a spot on the field, was due to play at Florida State on Thursday night in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Duke hadn’t missed the NCAA tournament since 1995.

“I feel deeply for our players, who have done a great job all season taking care of each other and the team,” coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement. “I am extremely proud of their attitude and their collective efforts, which could not have been stronger. We are disappointed that we cannot continue to fight together as a group after two exceptional days in Greensboro.”

The positive case now becomes an issue to watch for Louisville, who lost to Duke 70-56 on Wednesday night. Louisville hopes to receive a blanket offer for the NCAA tournament and is in the NCAA’s required period of seven consecutive negative COVID-19 tests for participants next week in Indianapolis.
