Mayor Bill de Blasio is still facing the heat – and not just Andy Cohen – for dancing with his wife at the start of the New Years in Times Square after the public were barred from gathering there due to restrictions of COVID-19.
The mayor became an easy target after his term in office tweeted a clip de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray moving on a stage in Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” after the ball fell at the Crossroads of the World to ring in 2021.
Meghan McCain, co-host of “The View,” joined him in slamming the screen, calling him “deaf to tone.”
“You have always been basically the worst politician in modern history – but by shutting down NYC [and] throwing your own private party in Times Square is really * bosses kiss * the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen a mayor do. Everyone Hates You DeBlasio ”, McCain tweeted.
Another woman accused Blasio on Twitter of “Openly mocking the citizens of New York who are prohibited from being in Times Square while you dance in the space created by restricting riffraff.”
And a third Twitter user said, “Total lack of self-awareness. Embarrassing.”
At the start of the New Year, Cohen appeared to launch criticism against de Blasio, first taking a photo of tequila live on CNN.
“That’s what I felt when I saw the mayor of Blasio dancing earlier,” he said. “I just don’t need to see this early in 2021,” Cohen said.
A spokesperson for de Blasio brushed off the insult to Fox News.
“This is not the first time that I have heard a drunken person complain about someone’s dance moves,” a representative told the store.
Times Square looked like a ghost town on Thursday night, the first time in 114 years the New Year’s Eve show was held without the presence of the general public.
De Blasio and McCray were present at the low-key celebration to kick off the traditional midnight ball drop.
Performers and several hundred first responders have also been allowed to enter the area.
