The Dulles International Airport has passed Reagan National Airport with respect to passenger traffic.

Both airports serve the metropolitan area of Washington, DC, and are managed by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

For years, airport authorities have tried to focus most of their growth on Dulles, where billions of dollars have been spent on improving infrastructure. In recent years, however, more passengers have been to Reagan, which is part of the urban core of the region.

The airport authorities, however, announced Tuesday that Dulles had surpassed Reagan in 2018 in terms of passenger traffic. Dulles had 24.1 million passengers in 2018, while Reagan had 23.5 million.

Passenger traffic at Dulles has increased 5%, while Reagan's at full capacity has decreased by 2%.
