Dungeon Encounters sets the scene in Square Enix with a grid-based RPG

There are only a limited number of ways to present a turn-based RPG, but it looks like Square Enix is trying to find new ones. We’ve already had the announcement of Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars, which gives the JRPG a playing card touch, and now the publisher has announced Dungeon Encounters.

This recently unveiled game is another turn-based RPG, but this time it spawns you on maps made up of squares lined up in a grid. You’ll probably have to watch the trailer above to get a feel for it. With a Final Fantasy pedigree at the helm – Hiroyuki Ito directs, while Hiroaki Kato is on board as a producer – chances are it could be a pleasant surprise.

The gameplay takes you through these grid-based dungeons, with the aim of mapping every inch of the maps and looking for hidden treasures, lost characters, and more. Of course, you’ll also be dragging your party into battles, which seem like a fairly straightforward turn-based affair. It seems like you have to pick the right teammates and come up with a little strategy to make your way deeper and deeper into the dungeons.

The game is slated for release on PlayStation 4 on October 14, 2021, so it’s only a few weeks away. What do you think of Dungeon Encounters? Be there or be square in the comments section below.
