Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., On Monday offered grim prospects for the Democrats’ immigration program as the administration struggles to deal with a flood of migrants on the southern border.
“Well, I don’t see. I don’t see a way to do it,” he said, when asked about the path to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants. “I want it. And I think we’re a lot more likely to deal with low-key elements.”
Durbin, who is responsible for collecting votes in the Senate, said he believes the Democratic-controlled House may not have the votes for comprehensive reform.
“I think President Pelosi has discovered that she does not have support for the comprehensive bill in the House. And I think that also indicates where he is in the Senate,” he said.

Durbin’s comments come as top Republicans have denounced the Biden administration for failing to adequately prepare for an influx of migrants, many of whom are minors. While the administration resisted for weeks, calling the situation a “crisis”, Durbin admitted on Monday that “the numbers coming in are overwhelming”.
Congress has struggled for years to reach a compromise on the various policy areas that constitute immigration reform.

Biden has made the issue a priority for his administration, pushing for a controversial measure to provide a pathway to citizenship for an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants.
The House of Representatives is expected to support two immigration bills this week, which would give DREAMS access to citizenship and create a system for farm workers to apply for legal status.
