Dustin Johnson underwent knee surgery; Back planned this fall

Dustin Johnson underwent arthroscopic surgery Thursday to repair cartilage lesions in the left knee.

In a statement released by his management team, Johnson is expected to fully recover after the "routine" operation and will return to competition later this fall.

This is the first mention of any health problem this season for Johnson, who was a finalist in the first two major tournaments of the year but has since struggled to regain his form. He competed in eight consecutive events without placing in the top 15 – his longest fall in years – and finished last month in the 30 Men's Tour Championship, slipping to third place in the world rankings.

Johnson had already had a similar procedure on his right knee in 2011.

Although he did not have an immediate schedule for his return, Johnson was expected to take the lead next month at the Houston Open.
