DALLAS (AP) – H. Ross Perot (pur-oh), the colorful and self-taught billionaire from Texas who has twice run for president, has passed away.

Family spokesman James Fuller said Perot died early Tuesday. He was 89 years old.

Perot went from the poverty of the Depression era to the founding status of computer services giant Electronic Data Systems Corp., one of the richest men in the country.

In 1992, Perot embarked on the presidential campaign as an independent candidate, defying President George H. W. Bush and Democrat Bill Clinton.

Perot garnered almost 19% of the vote, the highest percentage recorded by a third party in 80 years. Republicans accused him of Bush's defeat.

He founded EDS in 1962 and sold control to General Motors for $ 2.5 billion in 1984. He then founded another company, Perot Systems.
