As recently as last Friday in What Else ?, I commented on the shower talk trend of celebrities and all those famous people talking about bathing or not bathing their kids and / or them- same: Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, and also Jake Gyllenhaal. This is the anti-shower demo. Now the pro-shower demo – MY PEOPLE! – weigh.
Jodie Turner-Smith had a few comments:
before you even ask a lot:
in this house we bathe. pic.twitter.com/fxeTMovLJs– Jodie (@MissJodie) August 6, 2021
And Dwayne The Rock Johnson clarified:
No, am I the opposite of a “don’t wash”? celebrity.
Shower (cold) when I get out of bed to start my day.
Shower (hot) after my workout before work.
Shower (hot) after returning from work.
Face wash, body wash, scrub and I sing (off key) in the shower 🧼 🎶 https://t.co/iE6ZPhrthL– Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) August 7, 2021
Le Rocher, just like me! Like I said, several times I shower three times a day, at a minimum. It’s not long showers, but I clean myself, I wash myself often, quite often. I clean myself even when I’m not dirty because I would rather be TOO clean than UNDER clean.
But do you know what’s interesting? Anti-shower celebrities, so far, who have shared their lack of showering frequency are white. And the two who have come forward to all be like, yeah no, the shower comes in regularly, aren’t white. I know this is meant to be a fun and light little debate, but there is also an element of race and class that comes in here.
As a child of immigrants, who is part of a visible minority, it was a priority for my parents to make sure I was clean and tidy because we are judged differently. Like it or not, when I went out as a kid I felt like I represented more than myself or my family. It was as if the reputation of our community was at stake. And I know those of you who also come from BIPOC homes know what I mean. It is one thing when a white child is running around, it is quite another when a BIPOC child is seen as unclean. This remains as true today as it was when I was growing up. So for many of us having this conversation about showers and cleanliness levels, there is an added consideration for people who don’t or just can’t bathe until the stench has passed. ‘installed.
Attached – the boulder heading in and out of the gym. He showers BEFORE his workout, which is a lovely level of consideration.
