Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has become one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. But could he ride this wave of popularity all the way to the Oval Office? If Johnson’s new autobiographical sitcom, Young Rock, serves as a crystal ball, then that could be a possibility in 2032.
Young Rock, which premieres Tuesday on NBC, tells Johnson at three different ages growing up. The Fast and furious star also appears as himself in every episode these days, according to USA today, as he reflects on his life in mock interviews while campaigning for president.
Johnson has previously spoken of presidential ambitions, saying that in 2017 he “seriously considered” a race one day. It hasn’t changed.
“I would consider a presidential election in the future if that’s what people wanted,” he said USA today. “Really, I mean that, and I’m not flippant at all with my answer. It would depend on the people… So I would wait and listen. I would have my finger on the pulse, my ear on the ground. “
President Johnson wouldn’t be the craziest thing, given everything that has happened in his 48 years. The actor praised series creator Nahnatchka Khan for tackling his “Forrest Gump-ian wild life that I was lucky enough to have, (which) was complex and awesome and crazy and amazing”.
Johnson said he welcomes the opportunity to “pick up on these things and laugh and deliver them to the public in a way that will make them smile and make them laugh.”
One anecdote that might thrill audiences is learning Johnson’s nickname growing up: Dewey. Young Rock looks at Johnson as a preteen, played by Adrian Groulx, and the actor admitted he’s still haunted by the nickname.
In an interview with the New York Times, Johnson said “my mom calls me Dewey all the time.”
“And unfortunately she calls me that in public,” he exclaimed. “I hated that name when I was young – I hated it every time my parents called me that in front of girls, teachers and my friends. And he stayed. “
Johnson told the Times he was heavily involved in the casting of the series.
“And I was able to spend time with them, before the shoot, and tell them what I was during that time,” he explained. “What I thought were my priorities. The most important moments where I fell on my ass and had to get up. It was surreal, in itself. The thing that really caught my cold, dark heart was to find the actors would play my mom, dad and grandma and hang out with them. While we were having these conversations, they would start talking about what they knew about my mom, grandma, and my father [snaps fingers], in seconds, I would wake up. “
Johnson said his mother was his “consigliere” while helping to create the show.
“She felt we could introduce the tough ones [expletive] and the hard [expletive] because we have succeeded, “he added.” This is the lesson. Hope the people who are going through hard times [expletive], too, can see that there is a way out. You can go to the other side. “
Young Rock debuts Monday night on NBC.
