The iOS 15 version brings an added treat if you’re an immersive audio fan: a better soundstage for your tracks. As the WWDC hinted at in June, iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 users now have dynamic head tracking for spatial audio in Apple Music. As long as you’re using the AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, the instruments and vocals will have a fixed virtual presence – turn your head and that guitar or voice will move accordingly.
Apple had promised Apple Music lead tracking in the fall, but hadn’t directly linked it to iOS 15 at the time. You don’t need Apple’s high-end AirPods if you’re happy with “normal” spatial sound, although you do need some form of AirPods or Beats headphones if you want a plug-in. automatic loading of Dolby Atmos.
Yes, that’s a not-so-subtle sales pitch for high-end AirPods. This is only useful for that subset of the Apple Music catalog with spatial audio support, by the way. All the same, it could be appreciated if you want a more natural (or at least less jarring) approach to 360-degree audio.
