It's pretty well known that modern BMW engines tend to have more power and torque than advertised. And, I do not know if you've heard that or not, the Toyota Supra 2020 uses a BMW engine and chassis tuned by Toyota engineers. It turned out that I was right, as I always am, because I am a genius. The good employees of Car and Driver have just done what could be the first test drive of the Supra and, according to this test, it has more power than Toyota claims and lot more torque.
As a reminder, the Supra is equipped with a 3.0-liter, 3.0-liter twin-turbo BMW engine called B58B30M1. It is rated at 335 HP and 365 lb-ft of torque. But since this sports car weighs 3397 pounds, but can do zero to 60 mph in less than four seconds, it certainly feels more powerful than that.
The C & D dyno test at Livernois Motorsports and Engineering in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, seems to confirm this. Their Supra arrived at 339 HP and 427 lb-ft of torque, at the wheels. It is not uncommon for the wheel power of a car to be less that what is being cranked, but damn it is that this couple figure is a good surprise.
Here's how the magazine did the test:
We have attached the Supra to the Dynojet all-wheel dynamometer because the car's stability systems only work well when the four wheels are spinning. For this observation, we performed the test with a fifth transmission ratio ratio of the 1.32: 1 eight-speed automatic transmission to obtain a complete tachometer scan. We tested the ratio of 1.00: 1 in the sixth gear, but we could not reach the red line of the engine. The output power in sixth gear, however, matches our results from those of the top gear.
C & D thinks that the maximum output torque might be a little lower than that, but no matter how you turn it, the Supra is more powerful than we've been led to believe.
The numbers are one thing, but I can tell you in real driving that the Supra is a very fast car, certainly faster than the Porsche Cayman S, although it is not as tight on the track. Anyone who thought it would be slow is wrong.
