E3 2019: Marvel's Avengers game has good concepts, but we still have questions

[ad_1]

The next Marvel Avengers game finally debuted at the Square Enix E3 2019 press conference and left a rather noticeable impression on fans eagerly awaiting the superhero game. From Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal, the new superhero team game focuses on a playable cinematic action in solo or co-op. Introducing Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow and Hulk, it lets you play some of Marvel's most iconic heroes on various missions. Perform missions allows you to feed the character you have chosen and customize it as you please. And after its release on May 15, 2020, new missions and heroes will be added as free updates.

It's a really fascinating concept, but after the presentation of the game at the press conference, the details of the broader structure of the title and the instant gameplay are still a little vague. During the E3 2019, we saw the Marvel Avengers behind closed doors, which focused on one of the game's first missions. E3 2019, San Francisco is attacked the day of the opening of the West Coast Avengers headquarters, and the heroes are mobilized to fight Taskmaster and his henchmen, who all brandish stolen weapons to Tony Stark.

This level is defined shortly after the game is opened. This is an extended tutorial that gives you an idea of how each hero plays and their role in a team of other players. From this demo, the style, presentation and importance of Marvel's Avengers punctuating each encounter with a particular piece clearly indicate that the game is cut from the same fabric as any other action games – AAA adventure such as the Uncharted series or the recent Tomb Raider trilogy. – The latter is also controlled by Crystal Dynamics. The demo featured several highly scripted encounters, most of which were punctuated by fast-paced events that give each member of The Avengers their moment. The show of the superheroic, the type of elaborate gravitas and the consequent generalized collateral damage have become a common practice in the Marvel film universe.

During an interview with GameSpot at E3, Scot Amos, head of Crystal Dynamics studio, said the game was all about delivering a fun-filled experience to the Avengers, as each hero was designed so he could to run your own game

"We've created character-centric games with Lara Croft, and we've now created a game with six characters (including Ant-Man)," said Amos. "Then we thought we should create 12, then 30. It's crazy to be able to go back and say, here's all these other heroes can do on their own. "We started hiring people like Vince Napoli, who did God of War last year to lead the fight for the game. How can we bring together experts in these areas and say," Now make this awesome hero "with access to all those heroes who play differently, you can play whatever you want."

This level of openness strongly relies on the show, both in terms of basic combat and action-oriented story pieces with characters moving across levels at a pace quick. Combat seems quite similar to games like Batman: Arkham Asylum, allowing you to freely move and engage your surrounding enemies while activating the unique skills of each hero. Thor uses his hammer and lightning abilities to hit goons in the streets, for example. In addition to throwing his Hammer Mjolnir – which he can recall after a strike – he can also trigger lightning on enemies and even imbue increased energy with his regular attacks.

After cleaning up the enemies in the street, the action passes to Iron Man, who pursues after a series of airborne soldiers. In flight mode, Iron Man can move freely, firing missiles and repulsor explosions. In the field, he looks very much like the character's appearance in MCU movies, charging his attacks by hand and using them to reinforce his melee strikes. The super movement of Iron Man is the Uni-Beam, a powerful thoracic laser capable of destroying vehicles and eliminating most of the enemies in front of him. Then Hulk jumps into the fray. Attacking mainly at close attacks, he can catch his enemies, send them to the ground and throw them away easily. One of the characteristic movements of Hulk is his Sonic Clap, which eliminates all nearby enemies. His level section ends with the fact that he picks up a tank, drives his driver aside and throws him on another vehicle.

The action goes through Captain America, who fights enemies in the Avenger's Helicarrier. Similar to the Hulk, Cape Town is a brawler and is particularly concerned with close attacks. However, he can still use his shield to hit multiple enemies from a distance. One of his unique skills allows him to target specific enemies and send his shield under a powerful shot, with his shield returned to him after he has reached his targets. The demo ends with a confrontation between the Taskmaster and Black Widow, who uses a pair of truncheons and hi-tech spying gadgets. The villain quickly adapts to Black Widow's tactics, using his shield to block his long range attacks.

This whole sequence, which describes in detail how the Avengers were banished and why they need to get together, does a fun job in showing this familiar sight of MCUs. It looked a lot like a sequence that could easily be presented as a major piece of play in Marvel movies. However, a growing question that I asked myself throughout this demo is what kind of game is it exactly? One thing that remains a point of confusion is the general structure of the Marvel Avengers, which will apparently open for cooperative play as you undertake more missions. Following this linear demo, it is hard to imagine how all this will materialize in the form of a game as a service offering online cooperation. During our interview, Crystal Dynamics said the Marvel Avengers are following a "bespoke campaign," focused on missions based on the story and characters.

"Throughout our history, we have achieved very personal and intimate third person adventures," said Amos. "Something of this size, this gigantic game with all these heroes, it's not a matter of them, but all men." When we first teamed up with Marvel Games and said: & # Hey, how do we want to do that? Are we good? What are you good at? They know the heroism and humanity, we know the third person adventures and the character-based narrative. […] Switching between these heroes is even more fun. With these levels of the bespoke campaign, we want to tell a very specific story here, which you can always explore at your own pace. We want to tell a very specific story here. Why not go further than that? Once you have these heroes with whom you can play, you can start mixing and matching them online with your friends. "

I like what this superhero team game is trying to accomplish, but it seems like it is a retreading field already covered by other games. It does not help either that the style and the creations of the heroes are a little outdated and unflattering. In many ways, the new Avengers game has given vibrations similar to those of Marvel's PS3 / 360 licensed games, from the point of view of design and visual aspects. Despite everything, I enjoyed the show and the scale presented in the demo. Although this section focuses on a linear level, the full game provides a range of missions that open up and can be done as you wish – and that's something I can not wait to see.
