Microsoft's next-generation plans were revealed as Scarlett at the 2019 Xbox E3 press conference. Its launch is expected in Holiday 2020 and, although Microsoft has not shown the physical system or release of details about the final name, price or release date of the console, the company spoke to the system at a high level and described some of its specifications and capabilities. Scarlett has an AMD processor specifically designed for Zen 2, which will feature an SSD that would dramatically improve load times and also work as virtual RAM. The system features high bandwidth GDDR6 memory, four times more powerful than the Xbox One X, the most powerful console on the market. He also has a disk drive.
AMD Executive Director Lisa Su attended the Xbox briefing today. She congratulated Phil Spencer and his Xbox team on this announcement and their "amazing vision around the game".
"So honored and proud to create the future of the game with Project Scarlett in collaboration with your amazing team," said Su to Spencer.
The Xbox Scarlett is capable of variable rates of up to 120 frames per second and 8,000 frames. According to Microsoft, "hundreds" of people are currently working on the new Xbox, which will support games and accessories that you may already have.
Many of these details are aligned with those described by Sony about the PS5, which will also support upward and downward compatibility and will be equipped with an SSD.
The Xbox Scarlett console, or the name of its choice, will be launched in Holiday 2020. The price has not been announced. But what we do know is that Halo Infinite will also be released in Holiday 2020, presumably as the launching pad for the new console.
It is rumored that Microsoft would announce another Xbox console during the event, but that did not happen. Our previous understanding was that Microsoft will offer several new generation Xbox systems, much like the way it currently has Xbox One X and Xbox One systems.
According to Brad Sams, a Microsoft insider, Scarlett is the name of the next-generation global strategy for the Microsoft console. Anaconda is a high-end model, the system announced today, and the second is the low-specification model, Lockhart, which has not been introduced today.
