The opening of the PlayStation Showcase yesterday was the announcement of a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake in development for PS5 by Aspyr Media. But it appears that the original developer BioWare and publisher EA are not involved in the project. Game Awards host and host Geoff Keighley reached out to BioWare and EA to inquire about their involvement after the initial announcement on the PlayStation blog did not mention any of the companies. (The trailer also only ended with logos for Aspyr, PlayStation, and Lucasfilm Games.)
The response Keighley received from an EA spokesperson was a non-response that spoke volumes about the topic, never directly responding to his request.
I asked Bioware (and EA) if they were involved in the STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC remake announced yesterday and just got this response.

EA’s full response reads as follows:
We are proud of our long-standing collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, which will continue in the years to come. Our talented teams have created some of the most successful games in Star Wars franchise history, including Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Star Wars: Battlefront, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, Star Wars: The Old Republic and Star Wars . : Squadrons. We love Star Wars and look forward to creating more exciting experiences for gamers.
In listing ‘hit’ games, EA spokesperson does not mention BioWare’s beloved Knights of the Old Republic from 2003 (although the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic vaguely part of this series). They don’t directly answer Keighley’s question as to whether the developer or publisher is involved in the PS5 remake, which leads most people to assume they aren’t.
EA recently lost the exclusive video game rights to the Star wars license, with Disney forming Lucasfilm Games to give many publishers and developers the ability to play in this universe. While EA no longer exclusively creates the Star Wars title, they still retain a number of successes. Star wars franchises with which they continue to work in various capacities (it is said that a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is in development).
Since EA initially stated that none of its new Star wars games would be announced until next year, making it even more unlikely that they would be involved in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. How exactly Lucasfilm Games obtained the rights to Dirty off to Aspyr and PlayStation is currently unknown. Previously an Xbox console exclusive, the limited-time PS5 exclusive of the Dirty the remake is a massive change for the title.
It also questions Knights of the Old Republic place inside Star wars cannon. After Disney took over in 2014, it relegated all previous extended media to the “Star Wars Legends” label which it said was no longer canon. This included Knights of the Old Republic story. However, the Remake under Lucasfilm Games could indicate that it is reintroduced to canon, although the developer promises that it will stay true to its original story and characters. Aspyr has also assembled a seasoned team of Star Wars developers, some of whom even worked on the original game, so rest assured it’s in good hands.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake currently has no release date.
