Eagles are “close” to Carson Wentz’s trade | Bears and Colts should be last contenders, source says

Carson Wentz’s time with the Eagles is coming to an end, a person with knowledge of his business market told NJ Advance Media on Monday.

“I think this ship has sailed,” the person said. “I expect him to go (Monday) or (Tuesday).”

According to the source, the belief around the league is that the trading market will go to the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts. While an undisclosed third team are said to be in the mix, the source noted that the Bears and Colts are in charge and a deal is “done.”

While there is a feeling that general manager Howie Roseman is trying to push the market up, the person said Colts general manager Chris Ballard and Bears general manager Ryan Pace remained “disciplined” during negotiations.

Wentz knows both coaching teams. He worked under Colts head coach Frank Reich, wide receivers coach Mike Groh and Press Taylor passing game coordinator in Philadelphia. He also worked with Bears QBs coach John DeFilippo with the Eagles.

Wentz and Taylor are particularly close. As NJ Advance Media reported last month, Taylor’s approach to coaching with Wentz drew the wrath of other coaches and players as they felt Taylor was “gentle” on Wentz. While former colleagues praised Taylor as a coach and Wentz as a quarterback, their close relationship was viewed as negative by their peers.

That said, Taylor and Wentz may work better with the coach who no longer directly overlooks QB’s position. Wentz, who reportedly had a falling out with former head coach Doug Pederson last year, has built-in relationship and comfort with three Colts offensive staff. As Wentz weighs his options, the Colts should be at the top of his list.

The Bears and DeFilippo could also give Wentz a clean slate. While the Bears still house former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles on their roster, Chicago probably wouldn’t keep Wentz and Foles together, given their dynamic in Philly. Perhaps Foles could be included in a Wentz contract, as he could serve as a replacement or competition for sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts.

The Eagles will want significant compensation in exchange for Wentz. While the Colts won’t give the Eagles two first-round picks, according to Athletic’s Stephen Holder, maybe the Eagles can persuade the Colts to part ways with their 21st overall pick in this draft, with a few more trumps, in exchange for Wentz. The Bears have the 20th pick overall in the first round, so their offer could be somewhat comparable to the Colts’ proposal.

With Wentz coming off a disastrous season, the Eagles have their previous job to sell to trading partners. Wentz led the league with 15 interceptions and 50 sacks made, although he only played 12 games. Still, that sample size isn’t enough to sour the entire league over its game.

The Eagles would likely go ahead with Hurts in the quarterback if – or more likely when – they deal with Wentz. New head coach Nick Sirianni has not signed on for the job since taking office.
