Nick Sirianni’s first coaching staff in Philadelphia continues to rally.
On Monday morning, the Eagles struck a deal to make former Chargers offensive coordinator Shane Steichen their new CO, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Steichen, 35, was one of only two known candidates for the job, along with RB Denver coach Curtis Modkins.
Much like defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, Steichen has close ties to Sirianni. The two worked with the Chargers from 2014 to 2017.
If there were any questions about the Eagles letting Sirianni set up his own coaching staff, they have been answered in recent days. All the coaches we’ve heard added to this staff have worked with Sirianni before. That’s important because the Eagles really helped Doug Pederson put together his first stick five years ago. Pederson had worked in two locations, but under the same head coach, so he didn’t have the resources to build a high-level staff like Sirianni does now.
Sirianni and Steichen were both position coaches with the Chargers when Sirianni left to be Frank Reich’s CO at Indianapolis in 2018. After that, Steichen stayed with the Chargers and eventually rose to the level of full-time offensive coordinator. in 2020.
But Anthony Lynn was fired and Brandon Staley got the job in Los Angeles, so Steichen was available.
While Steichen became interim CO in 2019, he received that full-time title in 2020. Under Lynn, Steichen and QB coach Pep Hamilton, first-round pick Justin Herbert has had a season of recruit in escape. The Chargers were the No. 9 offense in the NFL, averaging 382.1 yards per game, and the No. 6 offense per pass.
In 2016, Steichen actually replaced Sirianni as the Chargers’ quarterback coach when Mike McCoy’s staff was reshuffled. Sirianni has coached receivers his last two years with the Chargers.
Earlier in the offseason, Steichen sparked the Seahawks’ interest in their position as offensive coordinator and was reportedly even running to stay in Los Angeles. But now he’s coming to Philly to form an offensive coaching staff with Sirianni and new passing coordinator Kevin Patullo, who is from Indianapolis.
Here is a history of Steichen’s coaching career:
2010: Louisville, offensive assistant
2011-12: Chargers, defensive assistant
2013: Browns, offensive quality control
2014-15: chargers, offensive quality control
2016-19: Chargeurs, Quarterbacks
2019: Chargeurs, interim offensive coordinator
2020: Chargers, offensive coordinator
2021: Eagles, offensive coordinator
