Day 14 of the Philadelphia Eagles training camp – the second of two joint practices with the New England Patriots – is on the books, and it was a short day (around 1:15), but a fun day, with a ton of action in the red zone. As always, we have notes.
Yesterday I tried to look like three fields at once. Today I decided to hone the Eagles offense against the Patriots defense, especially wide receivers and tight ends against defensive backs and linebackers. Glad I did, as it was essentially an Eagles highlight reel.
• Jalen reagor took the camp about a week ago, when he reached out and passed with his right hand to the back of the end zone with Darius Slay in close cover.
Today he has gone beyond that. It was similar in that it was another one-handed backhand grip with his right hand, except this time around he also used his 42-inch vertical, jumping over a defender of the Pats (Jordan logo style) and pointing him high. I imagine the Eagles are going to post this on all of their social media and you can see it, and it will be worth the wait. We’ll add it here every time they release it, but for now, here’s a taste:
Otherwise, today Reagor had one drop against air in warm-ups and another drop in 7v7, ha. I think he’s just gonna be this kind of player, who makes plays that most guys can’t, but also leaves easy plays on the pitch.
• Another highlight today was the 1 on 1, when Quez Watkins broken JC Jackson ankles on an unbreakable course that left him open in the end zone for an easy score. Then later in 1 on 1 Watkins beat cleanly Jalen Mills on a corner road. Mills participated in those workouts like he was at the Super Bowl, by the way.
• Tyree Jackson had a really nice bounce day after a shaky workout yesterday. He ran a nice line of stitching, and the ball was on him as soon as he turned to look for it. He had to quickly locate the ball and put his hands up to catch a nice anticipatory throw from Nick mullens. Jackson was rather proud of his efforts on the game, and he gripped the ball emphatically, Gronk-style. Good height and distance on the tip! (He’s a former QB, after all.)
Later, Joe flacco threw a ball in my direction (I was standing at the back of the end zone) that I thought was going to pass over my head, but Jackson skied and managed to catch up. He landed hard on the baseline in the back, so it was incomplete, but it was a really enjoyable and athletic game. Jackson remained on the ground for a few moments after the play. At the very least, it looked like he was on the rise. We’ll see how much he plays in the preseason game on Thursday.
• Same JJ Arcega-Whiteside entered the game highlights brigade. He latched onto a high throw from the back of the end zone and managed to keep both feet within bounds. And then later he made a contested touchdown on D’Angelo Ross, a 5’9 wedge, from the lunge.
If Arcega-Whiteside is on the list, we’ve argued that it might make sense to allow him to focus on the slots, where he can perhaps use his size advantage over slots corners. shrimp boats.
• Speaking of niche, we have not often mentioned Greg Ward, because you already know what his game is, but he made a great comeback from the end zone, catching TD today. Many of you have wondered if Ward would be on the list. I believe he will. He’s the Eagles’ most experienced receiver and adds value to special teams as a backup returner, though he’s not much of a threat to the game.
• DeVonta Smith participated a bit in team drills, but I don’t think he had any targets. If he did, I missed them. He had an awesome road in which he smoked Jackson on an incline and opened wide, but Zach Ertz also beat her guy solidly and opened wide on a rash. The ball went in Ertz’s direction, but there were several options open for a TD.
• The only receiver who struggled today was Travis Fulgham. He saw a lot of 6’3, 212 pound CBs Joejuan williams, who was often able to slow Fulgham down on the line of scrimmage, and was able to stay with him on his roads. I’d be surprised if the Eagles didn’t try to revive Fulgham in the game on Thursday because he didn’t have a good side.
• We mentioned Ertz above, but he and Dallas goedert done a bunch of takes the last couple of days. They weren’t necessarily flagship games, but Hurts leaned into the two tight ends a bit.
• I caught a few defensive streaks from the Eagles against the Pats’ offense. Alex singleton had a great choice of diving Brian hoyer, and Patrick johnson had a nice SEB against Cam Newton. Johnson has secured first-team reps in recent days and he’s done some great things in the preseason game against the Steelers. I intended to take a closer look at him since that game.
• In the last two days of training, I was not at all impressed with the Patriots’ play. Their roster is pretty low, with a few major question marks in the quarterback, in my opinion, and they might struggle this season. (That’s bad for the Eagles, since the Pats face the Dolphins twice, as well as the Colts.)
