Eagles training rumors: latest news on Duce Staley, Josh McDaniels and Nick Sirianni

Will the Philadelphia Eagles hire a new head coach this week? It remains to be seen. In the meantime, here is the latest buzz on their research.

DUCE STALEY

Howard Eskin of SportsRadio 94WIP said the following while speaking with Joe Giglio on Tuesday night:

“I heard it would probably go to Josh McDaniels or Duce Staley. The reason I think that’s what I’m hearing is that Howie (Roseman) really loves Josh McDaniels… Jeffrey Lurie not quite at the time and the interview with Duce Staley, from after what I was told, went really well. Jeffrey Lurie has also received numerous texts from players supporting Duce Staley. How much that means, I don’t know, but it will obviously have an influence. In Duce’s interview he was very clever, had some great ideas for coaches, especially offensive and defensive coordinators, both pros and college. He has guys from what I understand he spoke to if he gets the job. He is ready. From what I understand, it impressed Jeffrey Lurie.

Cool to hear that the Eagles assistant head coach / running backs coach has a real shot at landing the job. The feeling here is that Staley could be a good leader and a good overseer. You just have to hire the right staff around, including the right offensive play call coordinator.

It will be interesting to see how much weight Lurie puts in the opinions of his players. In addition to texting the owner, a number of former and current Eagles have voiced their “Hire Duce!” public sentiment on social networks. These names include Brandon Graham, Rodney McLeod, Malcolm Jenkins, and Torrey Smith.

UPDATE: Jeff McLane says he would be “very surprised” if the Eagles hire Duce.

JOSH MCDANIELS

What Eskin had to say about Roseman loving McDaniels and Lurie being skeptical was already touched on by Mike Florio on Tuesday morning. Via NBC Sports Philadelphia:

“I also heard yesterday – look, McDaniels ran the show in Denver. Howie Roseman has an important seat at the Philly table. How do these two coexist? I understand Roseman is okay with that. It’s just a matter of talking to the owner, Jeffrey Lurie.

It’s interesting that Roseman is okay with McDaniels’ arrival, as it is believed that McDaniels would require some level of staff control. Certainly more than Doug Pederson had, to say the least.

It is also perfectly understandable why Lurie would be skeptical of McDaniels. Lots of red flags there. Worries about ego, Colts dropping out of work, cheating in Denver, etc.

It’s a little curious how there was a lot of buzz about McDaniels and then the Eagles started interviewing other candidates today. That doesn’t necessarily mean the New England Patriots offensive coordinator is out of the race, however.

NICK SIRIANNI

NJ.com writer and BGN alumnus Mike Kaye shared the following about the Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator, who interviewed the Eagles earlier today:

So while Eskin says it’s probably between Staley and McDaniels, it may be too early to say they’re the last two.

On the one hand, there’s no reason for the Eagles to be in a big rush, as it’s only them and the Houston Texans who left openings. On the other hand, it is preferable to move the ball since the new coach will have a staff to fill.

Guess we could see some clarity ahead of the weekend, but there’s really no guarantee.
