People are in fact bidding on these listings for serious sums of money, not realizing that they are indeed being duped – and the auction site was forced to publish a statement, as published by Eurogamer.net.
“We condemn these opportunistic sellers who try to deceive other users,” the website said. “We are in the process of removing all PS5 photo ads from our marketplace and will take appropriate action against the sellers. With any purchase, but especially for items that are very expensive or in high demand, buyers should exercise caution and read the listing description carefully. “
At the time of publication, we’ve found a handful of fake PS5 auctions, although it looks like people are just messing around at this point. Eurogamer.net reports that there were around 350 announcements earlier today, but they have since been removed.
Sony’s new console has caused all kinds of madness in the UK, of which this is just the latest example.
