Eddy Cue from Apple puts the record on the NYT and WaPo to join the News + group

Apple Eddy Cue wanted badly for The New York Times and the Washington Post participate in its new news service News + subscription.

Vanity FairJoe Pompeo wrote that Cue was coming in and out of The New York Times"Offices many times to do his pitch.

The problem for large publications like NYT and WaPo If they put their journalism in a subscription that costs $ 10 a month, people who subscribe directly to the publications (and for more money) could simply cancel and go to News + to get the same content. And Cue wanted the publications to do all of its news content available on News +, and not just a subset of it.

This is a good deal for smaller publications that need to be exposed to many iDevice users. But larger pubs may be able to cannibalize their own subscribers. In addition, they would transfer a direct relationship with an information consumer to Apple.

So while Apple was able to register the the Wall Street newspaper, the absence of two major papers as NYT and WaPo could be a bargain breaker for some. And it remains to be seen how many iPhone users are willing to pay for their regular subscriptions to a single publisher. and, now, News +.

Pompeo tells much of the story of how Apple pushed publishers to join News +, which was announced on March 25.
