Four days ago, actor Edgar Ramirez shared a virtual chat he had with Dr Anthony Fauci on all things COVID-19 with a focus on the integrity and importance of vaccines for fight the pandemic and save lives. Ramirez came to the conversation after losing his grandmother, Bertha, a month ago to the virus.
When he posted the Fauci Chat, Ramirez explained how COVID continued to devastate his family in his native Venezuela, as his uncle Guillermo was “barely stable” after being hospitalized for a month, and his aunt Lucy’s fate was at stake. “I only hope a miracle saves the life of my Aunt Lucy.” She is dying from COVID, ”he wrote, adding that his other aunt, Nidia, had recovered after spending several days in the hospital.
Ramirez offered a heartbreaking update on Wednesday, reporting that Lucy and Guillermo passed away over the weekend. More devastating news broke on Monday: Nidia’s brother-in-law Rafael, “a dear friend”, also died after a months-long battle with COVID-19. Ramirez also explained that another dear friend, his Venezuelan agent Laureano, died from the virus.
“Sometimes I feel like it’s a nightmare I’m going to wake up from, but I know it’s not,” wrote Ramirez, star of recent projects like Jungle Cruise, Yes Day and The Undo. “It’s as real as air that it’s hard for me to breathe right now.”
Although he was overcome with emotion, Ramirez wrote a long open letter – calling it “the most painful and intimate thing I have had to post in my life” – because he wanted to educate others about the importance of vaccines, especially for those in countries like Venezuela that have yet to have the same access as those in the United States.
“My heart can’t just take more pain. I am sad, I am frustrated, I am devastated. It has been weeks and weeks that my family has been played, tortured and shaken by this cruel, treacherous and violent disease which ended up killing them all mercilessly. I can’t stand this emptiness in my chest, this metallic taste in my mouth, this crippling headache that doesn’t seem to soothe, ”he wrote. “None of them had been vaccinated. None had access to a vaccine in Venezuela. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of vaccines are thrown away in the United States because large numbers of people don’t want them. It breaks my heart that so many people in this country are willing to snub the very vaccine my family would have taken in an instant. “

Unfortunately, the miracle did not happen.
After horrible agony, my aunt Lucy passed away on Saturday.
And after stabilizing for a few days and in just a few hours, my uncle Guillermo collapsed and passed away on Sunday.
In less than 24 hours, COVID had taken both of their lives. We had not yet collected my aunt’s ashes when we were to cremate my uncle’s body.
Then on Monday, still unable to deal with the shock and horror of the weekend, we woke up to learn that my aunt Nidia’s brother-in-law, Rafael, a dear friend, had also died after months struggling with complications from COVID.
They all died exactly one month and two days after COVID claimed the life of my grandmother Bertha and 4 months since it claimed the life of my Venezuelan agent and dear friend Laureano.
My heart just can’t take more pain. I am sad, I am frustrated, I am devastated. It has been weeks and weeks that my family has been played, tortured and shaken by this cruel, treacherous and violent disease which ended up killing them all mercilessly. I can’t stand this emptiness in my chest, this metallic taste in my mouth, this crippling headache that doesn’t seem to soothe.
These waves of despair that I refuse to let take root in my soul.
None of them had been vaccinated. None had access to a vaccine in Venezuela. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of vaccines are thrown away in the United States because large numbers of people don’t want them. It breaks my heart that so many people in this country are willing to snub the very vaccine my family would have taken in an instant.
As my family and millions of people experience the nightmare of losing loved ones because there aren’t enough vaccines in the rest of the world, I hope everyone who can get vaccinated is doing so today. .
Don’t do it for yourself. Do this to protect those who are vulnerable, those with immune deficiencies, and anyone who can get very sick if they are infected.
What everyone agrees is that those who are not vaccinated can carry more of the deadly virus, and can transmit it faster and to more people, than those who have received a vaccine.
Getting vaccinated is an act of compassion.
