Education Secretary Betsy DeVos resigned Thursday, citing the riots that took place on the U.S. Capitol the day before, Fox News confirmed.
“There is no doubt about the impact of your rhetoric on the situation, this is the inflection point for me,” she told President Trump in a letter sent Thursday.
DeVos was just the last of many administration officials to step down after rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol, smashing windows, robbing and confronting police. In his letter, DeVos praised the administration’s accomplishments but noted that Trump’s tenure ended on a bitter note.
“We should recognize and celebrate the many accomplishments of your administration on behalf of the American people,” she said. “Instead, we have yet to clean up the mess caused by the violent protesters who are invading the United States Capitol in an attempt to undermine the affairs of the people.”

She added, “Impressionable kids watch all of this, and they learn from us. I think we all have a moral obligation to exercise good judgment and model the behavior that we hope they would emulate. They need to know. of us that America is greater. To that end, I am resigning from my post today, effective Friday, January 8, to uphold the oath I have taken to our Constitution, our people and our freedoms . “
Within weeks of leaving, Trump has lost at least two cabinet secretaries – DeVos and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao – as well as several senior advisers, including Mick Mulvaney who told CNBC “I can’t stay.” In the hours following the rioters storming the Capitol, Stephanie Grisham, former White House press secretary and chief of staff to the first lady, resigned.

Like Grisham, Chao and DeVos had been with the administration since its inception. DeVos’ tenure spanned almost the entire administration and drew attention for his advocacy on charter schools and his department’s decisions regarding Title IX.
Trump and White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany released statements denouncing the violence on Thursday. “Those who have violently besieged our capital are the opposite of everything this administration represents,” McEnany said at a press briefing where she did not answer journalists’ questions.
