Today, at Amazon's Autumn 2019 event, the company announced a new hardware model of Eero Wi-Fi networking. Our sources at Eero are rather quiet since Amazon bought the company in early February, contrary to Google, who manages to "disclose" the new pixel every year before its current debut, Eero and Amazon, do not confide their secrets. We were not even quite sure that a new Eero product would be announced today, and the details are still limited, but here's what we know.
The presentation of the new Eero by Amazon was primarily focused on ease of configuration and use, as it fits into the new "Certified for Humans" program. This program requires devices to pass with a review panel consisting of "typical consumers", with IT professionals and hardware enthusiasts specifically prohibited. Discussions also took place on the integration of Eero into the smart home ecosystem Alexa, Alexa skills allowing you to ask Eero to turn on or off the Wi-Fi access for specific devices as you like – think "Alexa, pause Playstation Wi-Fi" or similar. . This is currently only supported for Eero, but there is an API that will also allow other devices to support this skill. The features expected in the Asus and TP-Link routers later this year and the addition of Linksys in 2020.
This new Eero is a new model, not an entirely new generation. Functionally, this equates to an Eero Beacon with an ethernet plug and no night light. The case is designed to sit on a shelf or desk and looks more like an Eero Pro, but the radio chipset is the same 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) chipset used in the Beacon.
The price of this new Eero model is considerably lower than that of Pro or Beacon. A pack of three of Eero Pro costs 500 USD, and the most commonly sold Eero Pro + 2 Beacons costs 400 USD. In contrast, the new Eero model is selling in a pack of three for $ 250. This price reduction is identical in individual units, which sell for $ 100 each, which is half the cost of a Pro and $ 50 less than a Beacon.
Amazon expands the marketing reach of Eero. Until now, Eero was actually an exclusively American device. The third generation Eero debuted with prices in euros. Material support for France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom will be available in early November. (The Eero Pro should also soon be available in international flavors, according to the Eero / u / 6roybatty6 engineer on Reddit.)
The new Eero is essentially an Eero Beacon in a case of this kind. So it's a dual band, not a band, like Eero Pro, without support for Wi-Fi 6. Although it's disappointing, it should not automatically disqualify Eero. The smart solution is to find support for Wi-Fi 6 in your new devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc.) and wait for the Wi-Fi router or the mesh kit to be supported until it's ready. that the majority of your devices can support it.
With the new Eero prices as low – and as long as the new Eero kits are tested as did the old Eero – even without Wi-Fi 6, it could still be a smart upgrade for to support you in the next few years.
Update: As stated in the comments, Eero's CEO, Nick Weaver, and an Eero engineer are online on Reddit's / eero. The article has been updated to reflect the information that they have shared directly in this Reddit feed.
