In each project, there are teams looking for a franchise quarterback. Some years there is simply no quarter of franchise.

The 2013 version of the NFL was one of those years.

The announcement of EJ Manuel's retirement today and Geno Smith's attempt to catch up with the Seahawks is a reminder of how bad a series of quarterbacks entered the league in 2013.

Manuel was the first quarterback drafted that year by the Bills. He spent four years in Buffalo, but played only 17 games in those four years. He became a substitute with the Raiders in 2017 and has never seen the field in 2018. His career is over.

Smith was the second quarterback drafted that year by the Jets. He started all 16 games as a rookie, but had an ugly season with 12 touchdowns and 21 steals. His tenure as a Jets starter was completed in 2015 and he has since rebounded around the league with the Giants and Chargers.

Mike Glennon was the third quarterback drafted that year by the Buccaneers. He was a substitute at Tampa Bay, was overpaid during brief stints at the Bears and Cardinals and is now trying to replace the Raiders with reinforcements.

Matt Barkley was the fourth quarterback drafted that year by the Eagles. He never started a game for the Eagles, then he bounced around the league with the Cardinals, Bears, 49ers, Cardinals, Bengald and Bills, where he is currently replacing.

Ryan Nassib was the fifth quarterback drafted that year by the Giants. He's out of the NFL.

Tyler Wilson was the sixth quarterback drafted that year by the Raiders. He's out of the NFL.

Landry Jones was the seventh quarterback drafted that year by the Steelers. He is currently competing with Glennon for a replacement position in Oakland.

Brad Sorensen was the eighth quarterback drafted that year by the Chargers. He has never played in an NFL game.

Zac Dysert was the ninth quarterback drafted that year by the Broncos. He has never played in an NFL game.

B.J. Daniels was the 10th quarterback drafted that year by the 49ers. He made two assists in his NFL career.

Sean Renfree was the 11th and last quarterback drafted that year by the Falcons. He made seven assists in his NFL career.

2013 was an ugly year for quarterbacks, only one where the only good decision was not to write one.
