EL PASO, Texas – Two new deaths and 537 more cases of coronavirus were reported Sunday morning in El Paso County by health officials.
This brought the total for the pandemic to 1,643 deaths and 110,125 cases.
It comes as El Paso is about to take an important milestone on the vaccine front. Scheduled to receive 12,900 additional doses of the vaccine this week, it is expected to become the first of Texas urban counties to achieve an initial dose vaccination rate of 10%, according to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
Deaths from the virus reported on Sunday involved a man in his 60s and another in his 100s, who officials said had underlying health issues.
The number of active infections continued to rise on Sunday after again surpassing the 35,000 mark on Saturday. The number of active cases is now 35,270.
“El Paso appears to have settled, for now, according to a pattern of around 470 new Covid-19 infections per day. Over the past three weeks, the number of weekly new cases has been in a narrow range of 3,300 to 3,500, “writes Bob Moore of El Paso Matters in his weekly trend analysis. “The number of El Pasoans who died from Covid-19 last week was the lowest since October.”
Sunday morning, 427 residents of El Paso were hospitalized due to Covid-19, 146 of these patients listed in intensive and 94 remaining on ventilators. Hospitalizations are at their highest level since Christmas, but declined over the weekend.
Health officials have estimated that 72,647 residents of El Paso have now recovered from the virus, although doctors say some recovered people will still face health issues as a result of their infection.
