Elaine Thompson-Herah: Olympic champion runs second-fastest women’s 100m of all time

The Jamaican, who defended her Olympic 100-meter and 200-meter titles at Tokyo 2020, clocked a world lead of 10.54 seconds as she continued to flirt with Florence Griffith-Joyner’s world record of 10.49 seconds, established in 1988.

Speaking after the race, Thompson-Herah said she was surprised to have achieved such a quick time after the Olympics.

“To come back with a (personal best) after the championships is amazing,” Thompson-Herah told reporters. “I haven’t run that fast in five years.”

“I have so much more in me, so yes it is possible,” she added, when asked if she could set new world records in the 100m and 200m.

The Diamond League event was a repeat of Tokyo 2020, with Thompson-Herah compatriots Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson finishing second and third respectively.

Thompson-Herah set a new Olympic record in this race despite entering the games following an insignificant injury that threatened his inclusion.

Another Jamaican, Usain Bolt, won three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 100 meters between 2008 and 2016, and Thompson-Herah now has a chance to do the same at the Paris Games in 2024.
