Elijah Moore continues to be a highlight waiting to happen in Jets practice.
The rookie receiver’s last star turn came early in Friday’s session, on Zach Wilson’s first pitch on 11v11 drills. yards in the middle of the field. It was not the best pitch, sailing to the right of Moore, who was performing a post pattern. Moore stopped his course and adapted to the ball, pulling it somehow as he landed on his back.
It was just the latest proof that the Mississippi Jets’ second-round pick looks like the real deal.
“The coaches put us in the right position to be us,” Moore said of the play. “We all have different games throughout the week to see what we’re all good at. It was my turn to do the play. The ball is in the air, I have to make it.
Moore has only been Jet for three months, but his presence is that of a veteran.
“You would think he had been in this building for 10 years,” said coach Robert Saleh. “He asks all the right questions, he gets to work. He is an impressive young man. I am delighted to see him grow up.
After a good spring, Moore got off to a good start in training camp. He seems to be catching very close to him and has a speed that stands out even on a field packed with NFL players.
“I just stand at a high standard,” Moore said. “I learn from guys in front of me and every time it’s my turn to do something I try to do it like I’ve been there before.
One of the fun 1v1 battles to watch at training camp was LT Mekhi Becton vs. DE Carl Lawson. It’s a game that clearly makes the two better. Unfortunately for Becton, he can stop Lawson eight out of ten times, but the two sacks are what people are going to notice. That is the life of an offensive lineman.
Lawson made an early impression on the coaches.
“Traditionally, the O line is at a disadvantage when there are no pads,” Saleh said. “They are just at a disadvantage. There is more for a defender to catch. So traditionally they are at a disadvantage. But, when it comes to Carl, he does that to everyone. I know we’re trapped in the sacks, but my God all he does is win and hit the quarterback. It’s special when you look at him, you don’t expect it, but then he dominates. Really excited for the pads to come because then they’ll be able to get a really good one-on-one job and all do all of that.
The Jets worked on WR / TE free agent Jordan Matthews this week. … The first training session open to fans is Saturday.
The Jets gave up on K Sam Ficken after missing two baskets in Friday practice. They signed K Matt Ammendola, who was most recently with the Panthers but did not play in an NFL game. Ficken has been with the Jets for two seasons and has been inconsistent.
