Elizabeth and Lucas slow things down

Last week’s episode of When the heart calls you, “Welcome to Hope Valley” was full of dramatic events, from the verdict of Nathan’s investigation to Elizabeth and Lucas’ big moment at the end of the episode. It was a lot to take on, and thankfully, Hallmark Channel’s March 21 installment gives fans some leeway. There’s still a lot going on in Hope Valley, but not as many roller coaster moments as we’ve seen in recent episodes.

Love is in the air in this episode of ‘When Calls the Heart’

The Elizabeth-Nathan-Lucas love triangle has been the big story so far this season of When the heart calls you. But Elizabeth isn’t the only Hope Valley resident to live a vibrant love life.

In “What the Heart Wants,” we had a few more flirtatious moments with two of the not-quite-show couples. First, Florence (Loretta Walsh) and Ned (Hrothgar Mathews) shared another sweet exchange at the mercantile – until they were interrupted by Carson (Paul Greene) and Faith (Andrea Brooks), that is -to say. Meanwhile, Molly (Johannah Newmarch) and Bill (Jack Wagner) had an awkward interaction at the barbershop. Molly’s efforts to impress Bill last week with her new dress didn’t quite go as planned, but there’s still a lot of tension between these two.

Additionally, Hickam (Ben Rosenbaum) has an eye on Fiona (Kayla Wallace), although we don’t know if the sentiment is mutual yet. It’s not exactly an unexpected pairing, based on what we’ve seen in previous episodes. However, this complicates some fan’s theory that anyone who doesn’t win Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) will end up with Fiona.

Jesse’s great betrayal

Unfortunately, things weren’t that romantic in the Flynn house. Dottie’s Dress Shop is for sale, causing Clara (Eva Bourne) to fear that she will soon be out of work. Bill offers to increase his hours at the cafe and even suggests that Clara and Jesse (Aren Buchholz) join him as partners in the business. But Jesse hesitates, much to Clara’s disappointment. (By the way, could Bill’s multiple references to Abigail in this scene be a sign When the heart calls you organizing the return of Lori Loughlin?)

Later, we learn why Jesse didn’t jump at the chance to buy out a successful business. He has already invested their savings elsewhere. Worse yet, the money is gone. The result is a painful scene between him and Clara, with Bourne making her suffer and enraged over her husband’s actions perfectly clear. She’s worked two jobs to try and put them in a more secure financial position, but he seems willing to take shortcuts to get there and hide those shortcuts from his wife. It’s an alarming move, especially given his outlaw past. Jesse’s heart was probably in the right place – he probably wants to give Clara everything he thinks she deserves – but he made a big mistake, and fixing things with Clara is going to take work.

At Team Infirmary, things are also difficult. Since Faith returned from Chicago, neither she nor Carson knew how – or if – to advance in their romance. Now there is another wrinkle. Carson was offered a surgical fellowship at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. It’s a dream come true, but taking it means leaving Hope Valley – and Faith. He suggests that she come with him, but she points out that they are not married. Plus, she doesn’t want to leave Hope Valley. This sets up a big choice for Carson, who may have to choose between his career and the woman he loves.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth is getting ready for the school’s graduation day celebration. Robert (Jaiven Natt) gives the opening speech, with the help of some of the other students. They sing a song they composed in honor of their teacher. It’s the kind of moment that would seem hokey in almost every other TV show. Yet somehow it works in the idyllic world of When the heart calls you.

The celebration goes off without a hitch, and Minnie Canfield (Natasha Burnett) is even impressed enough to consider sending Angela (Vienna Leacock) to school next year, much to Elizabeth’s delight. But there is a hint of a problem in the air. Mr. Landis (Todd Thompson) arrives “on an informal basis” to observe the ceremony. He wants to bring the Hope Valley school into the larger regional district, but Elizabeth shuts him down. “It will not happen. I won’t let him, ”she said.

Lucas and Elizabeth have a real date

This week’s episode preview teased a few big events. One of them – the disappearance of Rachel (Jennifer Laporte) – turned out to be quite insignificant. Turns out she went for a walk and got lost. Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) and Lee (Kavan Smith) find her walking on a dark road. Even if she is shaken, there is no harm. But the other two – Lucas (Chris McNally) and Elizabeth’s date and Nathan (Kevin McGarry) ‘s nightly visit to Elizabeth – left a little more to unpack.

Let’s start by addressing this mysterious note that Elizabeth sent to Nathan. As it turned out, it had to do with his not attending parent-teacher conferences. He avoids Elizabeth, for obvious reasons, but they discuss Allie (Jaeda Lily Miller). Her academic performance suffered as a result of her worrying about the investigation.

Elizabeth then reminds Nathan how much he means to Allie. “You will always be the measure of the quality she looks for in a man when she chooses who to marry,” she says. It’s a strange thing to say at a parent-teacher conference, and it looks like this conversation may be more about Elizabeth and Nathan than her relationship with Allie. Does Elizabeth say that she is considering Nathan’s marriage (but maybe not for herself)? It’s hard to say. There’s a lot of unsaid in this scene – especially when Elizabeth brings up Fort Clay and Nathan pushes her away. The two seem to be holding something back.

Elizabeth’s interactions with Lucas in this episode couldn’t be more different than those with Nathan. She lights up whenever he’s there, whether he shows up to invite her for an early morning horseback ride or to ask her out on a “real date.” Their natural chemistry makes it easy to understand why so many viewers are invested in this pairing. “It’s like the first time in forever that I haven’t had something to weigh me down,” Elizabeth told her during their candlelit dinner. But she’s also not trying to rush into anything. When he takes her hand on the table, she doesn’t pull away. But she warns him that she has to take things slowly. “We have all the time in the world,” he replies.

The next episode of When the heart calls you Airs Sunday, March 28 at 9 p.m. ET on Hallmark Channel.
