Elizabeth Olsen had to fight to get an accurate costume in WandaVision

Elizabeth Olsen reveals how she insisted they fully embrace Scarlet Witch’s original comic book costume so she could wear it on WandaVision.

Elizabeth Olsen says she had to fight to wear Scarlet Witch’s faithful comic book costume in WandaVision. The actress officially dons the classic character look from the comics in an upcoming installment of the Marvel Studios series for Disney +.

Debut in 2015 Avengers: Age of Ultron, the MCU’s version of Scarlet Witch was very different from its print counterpart. For starters, they had to change her origins so that she wasn’t technically a mutant due to previous character rights complications, although now that may change given that the X-Men are back with Marvel Studios. Other than that, the franchise has yet to fully explore its power set, mainly due to the lack of full focus on the character who is primarily interested in the original Avengers. But after the Infinity Saga, that is all about to change as she assumes a more prominent position in the MCU starting with her ongoing appearance in WandaVision.

The half-baked version of the MCU on Wanda so far has also had an impact on her on-screen appearance. While the franchise is known to stick primarily to the appearance of its printed characters, Scarlet Witch’s costume has been toned down in the franchise. So when the chance to fully don his red helmet and cape set presented itself WandaVision, Olsen said she insisted on going all the way in a new interview with Vanity Fair.

“I was so excited! We have a Halloween episode and they were trying to figure out how we were going to wink at the character and it started with the classic Scarlet Witch costume. It was kind of like some gypsy thing that has to wear a blindfold and I fought for that. I was like, ‘No we have to go all out … it’s like the biggest thing, if Paul does it, I do it. “

Scarlet Witch Costumes

Scarlet Witch and Vision’s accurate costumes teased for WandaVision long before any official images were revealed for the show. Shortly after the project was announced, Marvel Studios released a concept art piece for the project showing the pair in a suburban setting, just like what their first three episodes looked like. But, in the left-hand corner of the illustration, the pair’s shadows described their true-to-comic book appearance, with Scarlet Witch’s pointy helmet prominently displayed. Eventually, this was confirmed by a trailer with the scene slated to be part of the 2000 episode of the series. Before that, he is already referenced through the beautiful credits of the show.

Interestingly, when Olsen first signed up for the job, director Joss Whedon promised her that she wouldn’t be wearing Scarlet Witch’s most provocative costume in the comics. There’s a good chance they’ll stick with his established on-screen appearance, as his precise comic book look was only made possible thanks to an upcoming Halloween-themed episode. WandaVision, it’s always something to look forward to. Maybe it could also indicate that Marvel Studios is finally ready to make her the A + character that she’s always printed.
