California Gov. Gavin Newsom received backing from Senator Elizabeth Warren in a fiery announcement released Wednesday, as the leading progressive accused “Republicans Trump” of “coming to power” in the Golden State.
The Massachusetts Democrat linked the recall election to alleged Republican attacks on “the right to vote” as well as challenges to the election results.

“We have seen Trump Republicans across the country attacking election results and the franchise,” Warren said in the 30-second clip. “Abusing the recall process and costing taxpayers millions”.
The ad aired on California air just weeks before voters could expect to receive mail-in ballots for the September 14 election.
Newsom faces more than 40 candidates vying to oust him from office following his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Big names like Olympic gold medalist Caitlyn Jenner, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and radio host Larry Elder are just a few of the more than 20 Republican candidates running against Newsom.
Eight other Democrats, one libertarian, nine independents and two members of the Green Party were also elected on the official ballot.
Warren had previously backed Newsom by condemning the recall election on social media. But his Wednesday announcement highlights the national attention top Democrats are giving to the gubernatorial race.
Although more than 46% of California voters are registered as Democrats – nearly double the number of registered Republican voters – Newsom could still face a tough election.

A recent UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll found that 47% of California voters support Newsom’s impeachment, while 50% said they oppose it.
The poll indicates what could be a tighter race than Democrats originally believed possible in the Deep Blue State.
Newsom’s campaign appears to have taken note of the tight poll and reached out to supporters in an email on Wednesday, arguing for a high turnout.
“Let’s be very direct and very honest: if we don’t have the resources we need to get our voters to vote, we could lose this reminder,” read the email, first reported by Politico .
Warren addressed the vote in his announcement and explained that Californians will receive a mail-in ballot asking them to vote for or against Newsom’s recall election.
“Vote ‘no’ to protect California and our democracy,” Warren told viewers. “Stop the Republican recall.”

Voters will be asked two questions on their September ballot. The first, whether Newsom should be recalled or not, and the second, who should replace it.
If the majority votes not to dismiss Newsom, he will remain in office.
