Electric car maker Tesla opened its first sales and service center in New Mexico this week through a one-of-a-kind partnership with a tribal nation.
New Mexico has laws in place that prohibit automakers from selling directly to customers without going through third-party dealers. The law has prevented Tesla from establishing an official presence in the state over the years.
But now Tesla has found a way around it. The electric car maker in partnership with the first nation de Nambé Pueblo to open its first facility inside a former casino on tribal land north of Santa Fe, where state law does not apply.
The facility opened on Thursday as tribal chiefs and state lawmakers praised the deal.

“This location will not only create permanent jobs, it is also part of a long-term relationship with Tesla. As the company works with pueblo nambe to provide education and training opportunities for tribal members, as well as economic development, ”Nambé Pueblo Governor Phillip Perez said at the opening, according to KRQE.
Democratic Senator Martin Heinrich (D) said it was a step towards decarbonizing the country’s transport infrastructure and expanding access to electric vehicles.
“We need to double this progress and expand uncapped consumption incentives for electric vehicles, facilitate the manufacture of electric vehicles in the United States, and fund the rapid electrification of the federal fleet of vehicles,” said Heinrich. said in a press release.
