Tesla Giga Shanghai has officially surpassed production at the Fremont factory, according to Elon Musk’s calculations. As Tesla’s main export hub, Giga Shanghai’s production will play an important role in the company’s global growth.

“We have three new factories. Giga Shanghai has done an incredible job. And Giga Shanghai is now overtaking Fremont in production, ”Musk announced at the 2021 annual meeting of shareholders.

Musk pointed out that the construction of Tesla Giga Shanghai took about 11 months and reached full production volume a year later. Since Giga Shanghai began operations, Tesla’s production and delivery figures have increased significantly.

In the first quarter of 2020, Tesla said it produced 102,672 vehicles and delivered 88,400. In the fourth quarter of 2020, Tesla’s production figures rose to 179,757. Tesla’s deliveries also increased to 180,570 in the fourth. quarter of the same year.

Tesla’s recent production figures for the third quarter of 2021 showed a significant increase in production and deliveries. Tesla said it produced 237,823 vehicles and delivered 241,300 units in the third quarter.

At the beginning of January 2020, Giga Shanghai had a production rate of 3,000 vehicles per week. At the start of 2021, Giga Shanghai reached a production capacity of 8,000 per week. As of early September, Giga Shanghai has a reported annualized production rate of 450,000.

“Actually, I would just like to give the Tesla China team a special helping hand,” said Elon Musk, taking a moment to applaud himself. “So it’s the best quality, the lowest cost and also low drama. So that’s great, ”Musk commented.

Musk’s mention of small drama could be a reference to Tesla China ‘brake failure’ protest incident, which sparked some sort of trend that could have damaged the reputation of the EV automaker. However, Tesla’s team in China quickly took legal action against the people who sparked the claims of brake failure and others who backed it up with false anecdotes.

Recently, Tesla China filed a complaint against the protester over a brake failure that climbed on a Model 3 display unit in April at the Shanghai Auto Show. Tesla China is suing the protester, Zhang Yazhou, for libel and demanding an apology and retribution of RMB 5 million (~ $ 700,000) for the damage caused to the company. Tesla China has also called for a public apology from social media influencers and Chinese media who admitted to making up stories about Tesla vehicle brake failures.
