Elon Musk could start implanting computer chips in human brains this year

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said his brain-computer interface start-up Neuralink could launch human trials as early as this year “if things go well.”

The San Francisco Bay Area-based start-up, co-founded by Musk in 2016, aims to implant a computer interface in the human brain to help treat neurological conditions such as Alzhemier’s disease, dementia and spinal cord injuries. In the long term, the company seeks to achieve a certain symbiosis between humans and artificial intelligence.

Sure Twitter On Monday, Musk responded to a request from another user to participate in human trials of the technology.

“I had a car accident 20 years ago and have been paralyzed in my shoulders ever since. I am always available for clinical studies at @Neuralink, ”Hammon Kamai wrote to Musk.

In response, Musk said trials could potentially begin later this year.

“Neuralink works very hard to ensure the safety of implants and is in close communication with the FDA. If things go well, we may be able to do human trials later this year, ”Musk wrote.

Musk had previously estimated that the company would begin human trials of the technology in the second quarter of 2020, which failed.

Musk revealed in an interview with the private social app Clubhouse on Sunday that Neuralink had placed a wireless implant in an ape’s brain that allowed the animal to play video games using only its mind.

“You can’t even see where the neural implant was placed except it has a faint dark mohawk,” Musk said.

Neuralink has been testing these interfaces on animals for years. The company last year present pigs with computer chips in their brains and displayed real-time neural signals from one of the animals.
