Elon Musk embarks on the NFT gold rush by selling a new piece of electronic music it is apparently produced as an NFT. Yes, you heard that right – it’s a song about non-fungible tokens, which Musk seems to have hit (or plans to hit) on the blockchain. Musk hasn’t included a link to the NFT, so it’s unclear if he’s already live or if Musk plans to launch the sale at a later date. It is also unclear on which platform Musk intends to sell the NFT.
We also don’t know if the song has a name, but we have some clues. The loop video Attached to the song Musk posted to Twitter Monday displays the words “Vanity Trophy” orbiting a golden orb affixed to the top of a literal trophy reading “HODL,” short for the “hold on for my life” phase.
The acronym HODL, although it is believed to have come from a drunken misspelling of the word “hold,” is both online slang and sort of a rallying cry for the bitcoin community, as it overtly encourages crypto enthusiasts not to sell their tokens. It should be noted here that Musk is a strong supporter of bitcoin. Tesla invested $ 1.5 billion in the cryptocurrency last month and plans to accept it as a payment method for its electric vehicles in the future.
At various points in the short video, the words along the trophy switch from “computers” to “never sell” as a singer sings lyrics like “NFT for your vanity” and “computers never sleep”. Did I mention that the trophy also has little golden dogs, or “doges” if you will, circling around it as well?
As for the song itself, well … there’s not much to say. It’s loosely a techno song if you want to dive into the genre (with some electro house vibes added), and it’s appropriate given that Musk called himself Tesla’s “technoking” in a real repository with the US Securities and Exchange Commission this morning.
It’s not very good, although by the standards of Musk’s previous work in the electronic music scene – not quite certifiable a ‘Don’t Doubt ur Vibe’ banger – I’d say it’s a improvement.
