Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite Internet provider, will double its speed “later this year,” according to a tweet from Elon Musk, posted in response to someone who had just received their Starlink Beta Kit (via CNET). In the response, Elon also tells the person that their latency should improve to around 20ms as well. In the screenshots from the speed test, their latency was 34 ms and 44 ms, respectively, while the Starlink website says they expect to be between 20 and 40 ms during the beta.
The speed increase and latency improvements should be a nice surprise to anyone doing a $ 100 Starlink pre-order. However, it is well known that Elon’s promises regarding the future should be taken with a grain of salt, especially when it comes to deadlines. Nonetheless, it shows that SpaceX is looking to speed up Starlink and that it might be able to keep pace with what’s available from copper wire all the way to your house.
