Tesla Model Y may be a compact SUV, but it offers a breathtaking view of the sky.
CEO Elon Musk retweeted on Wednesday a video of the car driving through the streets of New York, originally posted by the Tesla Account on Monday. But if you weren’t aware of one of Tesla’s more eye-catching design choices, you might not realize that these are images taken from a car at all.
Instead of a slippery test drive, you see buildings glide serenely above the vehicle through a glass roof. It’s a demonstration of the Model Y’s impressive design – a roof that seems almost invisible.
The company first turned to this design when it launched the Tesla Model S sedan with a panoramic sunroof in 2012. Four years later, Tesla took it one step further with an all-glass roof that has removed brackets to create a continuous design.
“I highly recommend the new all-glass roof of the Model S”, Musk wrote in 2016. “It was very difficult to develop, but it makes the interior amazing. “

That same year, Musk released the company’s second blueprint that outlined its goals for reaching a mass market. It included a cheaper sedan called the Model 3, a compact SUV dubbed the Model Y, and a pickup truck. The Model 3 hit the road in July 2017 and the Model Y in March 2020.
Despite their cheaper prices, Tesla kept the all-glass roof for the Model 3 and Model Y. The video shows how this feature can make the views above incredible:
The video was taken by a Twitter user with the name “Virus_City”. In response to their newfound fame, user wrote:

This isn’t the first car to feature a glass roof – in fact, rival electric vehicle Jaguar I-Pace also has a glass roof, similar to other vehicles in the company’s lineup:
Tesla glass roof: how does it work?
In September, Tesla released a video explaining how she is developing her glass:
The video explains that Tesla must bend the glass to the correct size for each part used in the vehicle.
To reduce exterior noise, Tesla uses acoustic laminated glass. It is in fact a sandwich, where an acoustic damping layer is sandwiched between two panes.
For the roof, Tesla uses a 2% tint to reduce glare from the sun. This is combined with various films, used to reflect solar radiation, and a polyvinyl butyral which helps achieve better solar and acoustic reduction. The roof absorbs 99% of incoming ultraviolet radiation.
Another area of interest is the windshield. As the windshield covers a front camera used for Tesla’s semi-autonomous autopilot mode, the glass effectively acts as a camera lens. This means that the team should test for distortion to ensure a clear view of the camera.
Despite the glass roof, Tesla claims the Model 3 can withstand four times its own mass during roof crash tests.
