Elon Musk commented on the Tesla Cyberquad for the first time since unveiling the electric ATV with the Cybertruck in 2019.
The CEO said it will be the safest mountain bike in the world.
When Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck in 2019, CEO Elon Musk had a little “one more thing” moment on stage when they released the Tesla Cyberquad, an electric ATV, to show off the payload capacity of the Cybertruck’s bed. At the time, it was not clear if Tesla planned to make the electric ATV available, but Musk later confirmed that this would be an option for Cybertruck buyers.
We haven’t heard from Tesla about the Cyberquad since, other than a few appearances at events. Hot Wheels also teamed up with Tesla to make a toy version of it, but that was about it until last week, when Tesla filed a new trademark on ‘Cyberquad’.
Today at Tesla’s shareholders meeting, Elon Musk made the first comments about the electric mountain bike in years.
He was asked if Tesla plans to build Cyberquad at Gigafactory Texas and the CEO replied:
“We certainly manufacture Cybertruck here and therefore probably the ATV too. Mountain biking is an interesting design challenge because ATVs are quite dangerous and we want to make an ATV that is the least dangerous ATV.
Musk added a few details on how Tesla plans to achieve this:
“It will have a very low center of gravity because the battery pack is going to be low. I think there are a few things we can do with the suspension to make this thing really hard to roll. When an ATV rolls, it’s when bad things happen. It will be the mountain bike that will not roll.
It doesn’t look like Tesla is at an advanced stage of Cyberquad design.
As we previously reported, the original prototype unveiled at the Cybertruck event was a Yamaha Raptor ATV converted to electric with a Zero Motorcycle powertrain.
Tesla certainly has time to get there. During today’s event, Musk linked the Cyberquad to the Cybertruck again, which is itself postponed until the end of 2022.
