Elon Musk’s 25 cannons: a 25-person Tesla engineering task force to fix Gigafactory Berlin

We learned more about Elon Musk’s “25 guns”: a 25-person Tesla engineering task force to fix the Gigafactory Berlin.

As we reported last week, Musk traveled to Tesla Gigafactory Berlin to strengthen his recruiting efforts and personally interview candidates.

He shared the “[email protected]” email address for people to apply, which raised many questions from people about what “25 guns” means.

Muthu S, head of infrastructure for engineering, procurement and construction at Gigafactory Berlin for Tesla, revealed that “ 25 guns ” is a nickname for a new 25-person engineering task force in a LinkedIn message:

“At Giga Berlin, we plan to launch a special 25-person engineering task force that will be deployed to where the most difficult problems lie, reporting directly to Elon.”

Muthu added that there are only 3 requirements to be part of the Tesla 25 pistols:

  1. Proof of exceptional and demonstrated engineering talent
  2. Be an excellent problem solver / have an unconventional approach to problem solving
  3. Energized to do amazing things

It wouldn’t be the first time that Tesla has set up such a task force. This has been a staple Musk strategy for years, especially when it comes to manufacturing projects.

Tesla Gigafactory Berlin appears to be doing fine, but we recently learned that Tesla may face delays at Gigafactory Berlin due to lack of permits.

As we previously reported, Tesla continued with the construction of the Gigafactory Berlin without final approval of the project.

Instead, the automaker was able to move forward with construction through individual permits, but its luck may now be running out, according to reports from Germany.

The “25 weapons” reported to Musk could be sent to problematic areas of the plant that could potentially slow down the production schedule, which is officially July 2021 – although there have been rumors that Tesla could aim to start production earlier.

Other challenges are expected to arise closer to the start of production as Tesla is expected to introduce new manufacturing technologies at Gigafactory Berlin, including what Musk described as “ the most advanced paint shop and Tesla’s new structural battery pack design with one piece front and back casting.

I really like this way of thinking. Let’s be honest, this is not revolutionary. Other companies have task forces to deploy when needed, but I like the concept and you know Tesla is betting big on this if they are going to report directly to Elon.

It might also be interesting that after Berlin they are sent on a “mission” to other Tesla facilities to help implement the same new manufacturing techniques Tesla plans to develop at Gigafactory Berlin.
